English Georgian Chippendale Mahogany Double-Sided Pembroke Table, circa 1760

About the Item

A very fine English late George II, early George III period circa 1760 mahogany Pembroke or drop-leaf table of Chippendale design, the rectangular single-board top with drop-sides and spiral-ribbon carved edges above shallow opposing drawers with original cast brass bail handles and foliate rosettes between blind fret carved straight supports on original brass casters joined by galleried lower shelf. Open width is 36.88". An outstanding example. The carved blind fret design exhibited here is exactly illustrated in plate number CLII in Thomas Chippendale's 'The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director first published in London in 1754 and the table form is referred to by him as a "breakfast table".
