Gustavian drop-leaf table, origin: Sweden, circa 1800 all in magnificent, original blue color Provenance: Private collection, Southern Sweden This 18th century Swedish, Gustavian drop-leaf table is multifunctional. With the leaves down it can work as an elegant console (allowing for an extra table, when needed) and with the leaves open (full or partially) this table can be used as dining / kitchen table, work table and writing table /desk. In the 18th century, Swedish modern furnishing ideal was purely functional and utilitarian. The furniture, including the drop-leaf table, would have been pushed up to the walls; the main room always including the customary drop-leaf table. Pale colors, such as this table, and light-suffused interiors of the manor houses contrast with the rich claret red (Falun red) wooden exteriors. The original objective of bringing “light” into people's homes during the long, dreary and dark winter days still works in our homes today. Beautifully simple, elegant furniture combined with crystal chandeliers and mirrored sconces lit by candles all come together to create a magical interior. All pieces have a purpose and no excess is evident however there is a warmth which emanates from their aesthetic. More importantly though, Swedish antiques mix so well with pieces from all-over the world spanning many centuries. There is a timelessness to all created. The furniture from Baroque, Rococo, Gustavian and Karl Johan periods all work well together, even mixed with mid 20th century furniture/lighting and are “at home” easily in an early American house or a modern home or loft space. The Gustavian, neoclassical period is characterized by a return to symmetry and straight lines, antique motifs such as laurels, medallions, and columns, replacing the curving, delicate and asymmetrical elements of the Rococo period. In Sweden, an aesthetic simplicity of everyday life took hold of the court and countryside. The neoclassical style desired characteristics were classical proportions, pared down silhouettes and often pale gray painted surfaces. This table is a wonderful example of Gustavian refined purity and simple elegance. The popular style spread quickly to the city houses of the Swedish society and out to their country houses, where it became more rustic yet still recognizably Gustavian in its origins.
