About the Item
An exquisite and rare example of the 1920s Swedish Grace movement—Sweden’s unique and refined interpretation of the international Art Deco style—this elegant round side table balances refined classicism with streamlined modern sophistication.
The circular tabletop showcases a spectacular contrast in highly figured golden flame birch at the center radiating outward to a perimeter of rich dark flame birch edge with golden elm. This gradient effect and use of prized woods were hallmarks of high-end Swedish cabinetmaking of the era. The contrast is further amplified by the deep, dark-stained hardwood used for the structure.
The piece stands on four beautifully curved cabriole legs, a subtle nod to classical forms, which are connected by a geometric, curved diamond-shaped lower shelf.
This table is a versatile masterpiece, functioning perfectly as an end, side, or lamp table, offering both sculptural elegance and practical storage. It is an investment piece that defines the sophisticated beauty of Scandinavian Art Deco.
The term Swedish Grace was coined to describe the uniquely Nordic aesthetic that flourished in Sweden during the 1920s, running parallel to the broader European and American Art Deco movement.
Unlike the more opulent French Art Deco, Swedish Grace is characterized by a sophisticated marriage of restrained Neoclassicism with streamlined modernist simplicity. The designs emphasize:
• Premium Indigenous Materials: A focus on native Swedish woods like Flame Birch and Elm, often utilized in striking, figured veneers.
• Contrasting Palette: The intentional and dramatic juxtaposition of light, glowing woods against dark or ebonized structural elements, creating depth and visual interest.
• Graceful Form: Incorporating classical elements like the elegant cabriole leg, but simplified and refined for the 20th century, resulting in furniture that is both functional and graceful.
This table perfectly embodies the high-quality craftsmanship and aesthetic vision of this pivotal moment in Swedish design history, championed by celebrated firms and designers like Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) and Carl Malmsten.
