About the Item
A fine Hungarian side table in the French Art Deco style. The book-matched wood grain is Hungarian walnut.
Though French Art Deco is much more famous, Hungarian furniture makers eagerly embraced the Art Deco style of the 1920's and 1930's. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1918, Hungarian artisans looked for new models rooted in modernism. No style better expressed the spirit of the modern age better than Art Deco, with its smooth, flowing lines and lack of unnecessary ornament. Since the Hungarians had already mastered the art of using book-matched veneers since the Biedermeier period of the early 1800's, they had no difficulty mastering the new Deco designs.
Today a few old and established workshops remain, still making high quality, mostly Art Deco-influenced designs. This elegant table with its slender legs and glossy book-matched burl top is a modern interpretation of an original 1930's design. It is surprisingly heavy, owing to the density of the hardwood (walnut) legs and top. it makes a wonderful side table in a contemporary home.
