About the Item

Bronze Table with Falcon Eye and Tiger Eye Top Théodore Millet Circa 1890 This exceptional table by renowned Parisian ébéniste Théodore Millet epitomizes the grandeur of late 19th-century French decorative arts. The masterpiece harmoniously blends noble materials, including mahogany, chiseled gilt bronze and a spectacular hardstone top of tiger's eye and falcon's eye, into a work of refined opulence. Supported by four classical female caryatids, the table’s sculptural base draws inspiration from the neoclassical revival style championed by Adam Weisweiler, with Millet’s signature flair for detail and balance. The table’s square top with canted corners features a dramatic twelve-pointed star radiating from the center, inlaid with mesmerizing bands of golden tiger’s eye and iridescent blue-green falcon’s eye. Both stones exhibit chatoyancy, a silky, shifting luster that animates the surface with every movement. The top is framed by an ornate gilt bronze ingot mold delicately chiseled with a leaf motif, complementing the rich mahogany base and its fluted, tapering legs. An urn-shaped finial at the crosspiece, draped in gilt bronze, further anchors the table’s design in classical tradition. Théodore Millet, who founded his atelier in 1853, was a distinguished cabinetmaker and bronze manufacturer known for his mastery in creating luxurious furnishings in the Louis XVI and Empire styles. He exhibited at the major international exhibitions of his time, winning medals and earning acclaim for the quality of his gilt bronzes and hardstone works. A similar table with an amethyst top and caryatid supports is illustrated in Paris: The Quintessence of the 19th Century by Christopher Payne on page 473. 27 7/8" high x 20 1/4" diameter
