About the Item

"The French Empire style which impacted furniture design and other arts was popular from about 1804 to 1815, lasting longer in some areas. It developed in France under the reign of emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, but the style spread to influence designers across Europe." This handsome table is a fine example from that French period and features decorative gold gilt ormolu mounts and a black granite top. Very versatile as an end table, dry bar or small console table. "French Empire style developed after the French Revolution when Napoleon Bonaparte became emperor of France and other areas of Europe. Napoleon's government mandated a style of architecture and furniture that drew on motifs from antiquity, or ancient Greek and Roman times. This trend had already begun to develop in the eighteenth-century Enlightenment period and in the movement known as Neoclassicism, which drew on motifs and themes from ancient Greek and Roman culture. However, under Napoleon's orders, these motifs were explicitly used to glorify the power of the French Empire.".
