About the Item

This unique switchblade style end table was attributed to Bertha Schaefer for Singer and Sons. It was purchased by the previous owner at Wright Auctions in Chicago. They had the table refinished and in the process the original Singer and Sons label was lost. I've attempted to see if I can authenticate the table but I have not been able to find an identical match with labels intact. Although originally designed as an end table (that could expand), this table could also serve as a coffee table for a small apartment. It has a lovely tapered shape, beautiful wood grain and satin finish. When the lower, smaller table is tucked underneath the dimensions are as they appear in the listing. The table underneath is approximately 28.25" D x 18" W (at widest point) x 14.5" H. The lower table is attached to the upper table. You can slide the smaller table out to create your own configuration. Bertha Schaefer was an American designer and gallery director, well-known for her contributions to furniture design, interior design, and the art world. Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi in 1859, Schaefer trained at the Mississippi State College for Women and the Parsons School of Design. After a brief period in Paris, she returned to New York City and in 1924 established Bertha Schaefer Interiors. This company specialized in designing Bauhaus-inspired furniture and interiors for both residential and commercial clients. Schaefer's work gained significant recognition, including being featured in MoMA's "Good Design" exhibition in 1952, for which she also won a design award. From 1950 to 1961, she famously designed furniture for the M. Singer and Sons Furniture Company. Her designs often featured clean lines, sculptural forms, and a harmonious blend of materials like walnut and travertine, embodying a Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. Examples of her furniture include desks, dining tables, chairs, sofas, and nesting tables.
