Oval coffee table with scagliola top

About the Item

This very distinctive and elegant furniture was built in the area of Emilia Romagna. This can be inferred for several reasons. One of these is that the tabletop is made of scagliola, with multi-color geometric patterns. Scagliola is a material that was originally produced in Modena, using a special chalk that was hardened and colored. Such material could be used to replace marble, which is much heavier and more expensive, as well in all its different types. Scagliola was thus used in a variety of ways: it was used, for example, to make columns and pillars in many churches. The table's wooden base with pyramidal legs is perfectly in keeping with the neoclassical style, which was the fashion throughout Europe in the 1700s.
