About the Item

A Stunning Regency Period, 19th Century Georgian, Burr Yew Wood Baby Pembroke Table, Or Occasional Lamp Table, Retaining Excellent Colour And Patina, With Superbly Figured Oval Two Flap Top, Above Two Frieze Drawers, Opposed By Two False Frieze Drawers To Reverse, With Later Brass Knobs, Raised On Square Central Support, Terminating On Quad Form Base With Four Elegant Sabre Legs And Original Brass Castors. This is a beautiful and really unusual table, of the highest quality. It boasts simply the most wonderful yew wood veneers, which over time have retained a wonderful colour and richness to them. Rather unusually the frieze is angled down, which is something we don’t really have an explanation for, nor have we seen before, but certainly it adds to the elegance and is a nice feature. This type of table is actually referred to as a “Baby Pembroke” table and this is due to the fact it is of course smaller in proportion than its full size siblings. These smaller varieties are even more useful than their full size counterparts and can be used pretty much anywhere that one desires around the home. Pembroke tables in their full size form quickly became one of the most popular pieces of furniture around the homes of the mid 18th century onwards, mainly due to their huge versatility and the plethora of different spaces which they can be situated in. In fact George Hepplewhite himself described pembroke tables as the most useful of tables and there are many references to them in 18th and 19th century literature, with Jane Austen herself even describing them being used in various different ways. It is absolutely certain that they are just as incredibly versatile for use in todays world as they were in 18th century england. The ability of being able to use the two flaps to create significant variation with the size of the table top is very much a popular feature. As with all items which we offer for sale this baby pembroke table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. Late Regency 19th Century Gillows Oak Wine Table
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very good quality 19th century regency period oak wine table, or lamp table, attributed to gillows of lancaster, having shaped tray top with gadrooned, carved, decoration over moulded reverse tapering column with stylised lotus baluster and elegant swept tripod legs with foliate carved decoration. "Attributed To Gillows." This fine quality, charming little table follows a widely recognised design pattern which features in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books for 16 July 1822, which refer to a "double round cornered top" and then appear again several times throughout the 1820's and 1830's. The designs are often referred to as "Flower Stands", or "Flower Tables" and there are various different itinerations to be found throuout the Regency and William IV periods. Constructed from charming, warm, rich oak veneers this little table is a great example. The carving is crisp and well executed and it retains a good colour and patina. It also remains in excellent condition and has clearly been well loved and well looked after throughout its history. The dimensions are great. Big enough to be practical and functional, but small enough to go just about anywhere around the home and serve a purpose as an antique lamp table, antique bedside table, antique wine table antique...
