About the Item
The Laguna end table shown here in ebonized walnut and glass can be made in custom sizes, shapes and various woods and finishes. The same design details apply to all possible variations. Popular glass top shapes are oval, rectangular, square and round.
The Laguna series tables are some of my favorite and most challenging to build. Each base is unique as the process and resulting form is ultimately sculptural. The 1/2" thick tempered glass top is supported by a base made of walnut consisting of tapering arcs of varying size which intersect to form a dynamic structure.
The series works well with almost any shaped top be it glass, stone or solid wood. The Laguna series of tables makes the ultimate sculptural statement in any setting. Each table base is unique comprising of a number of tapered arcs joined to create a structure with endless visual possibilities.
All the elements are shaped, joined and finished by hand so as to create a united design.
Each Laguna table is designed and made at the Black Creek Designs studio in New Canaan, CT by Thomas Throop with meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Since 1992 Thomas Throop/ Black Creek Designs llc has specialized in designing and building one of a kind furniture. Satisfying clients with unique and inspired designs made to the highest level of craftsmanship with the finest woods available. Each piece tells the story of a collaboration between design, process and material. Working closely with his clients, a dynamic dialog ensures an exceptional outcome. In addition to having pieces purchased for significant public and private collections, Throop has won numerous awards for his furniture. He has exhibited widely in galleries and in over 100 juried exhibitions in the US and England, contributed to several books and has been featured in many prominent magazines. The exploration of contrast and balance has been a constant in my work for over 30 years. My desire to create both subtle detailing and bold statements adds to the richness of the designs. Classical training in England gave me the appreciation for the importance of craftsmanship and transcendent beauty of wood in all its variation. More importantly it has given me a basis to engage in the process of designing and making furniture that has an interplay of form and function from the simple to the complex.
This end table can be made in custom sizes, shapes and various woods and finishes.
Wood choices include sapele mahogany, ash, walnut, maple, cherry etc.
Finishes include natural, blackened and cerused.
All options considered and priced accordingly.

The Oriel III side table features a blackened solid ash base which has been burned in the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban technique. This technique when used on ash reveals the deep richness of the open grain and creates a unique black quality which is heightened by the hand rubbed oil finish. The cantilevered top and waterfall joined leg in highly figured elm complete the structure. The unique elm plank has been stabilized with the use butterflies. This is done on the underside so as to not impose on the character of the figured elm has been cerused to further highlight the grain that flows from top to leg. The heightened contrast is created both in color and in form. The mass of the black leg frame serves as a perfect balance to the the cerused and cantilevered top. The overall effect is a highly sculptural table that is ultimately very functional. Each element is selected, shaped, joined and finished so as to create a unified design.

This new Afilar oval coffee table features a sublimely straight forward blackened walnut base supporting a 1/2" thick glass top. The design affords a clear top surface while offering display space below on the Claro walnut shelf. The supporting legs are tapered which is accentuated by tapered champers which lead the eye from the mass of the bottom to up the glass support points in a highly unique shape.
This is a very versatile design that can accommodate a variety of symmetrical shapes with corresponding lower shelf. These shapes include circle, square, oval and rectangle as shown. Matching side tables can also be made to any height utilizing the same design and structural language. The overall effect is a highly sculptural table that is ultimately very functional.
