Victorian Walnut Music Stand/Lectern. C1869
About the Item
In the “Cabinet Dictionary” of 1803, Sheraton says the term “Canterbury” was then applied to specific pieces of cabinetwork that the Archbishop of Canterbury was said to have ordered including a variation of this form. The decorative pierced fret work sides is something the invention of the fret saw allowed and is nicely embraced by many celebrated Victorian Cabinetmakers including Blackie and Sons (see his “Victorian Cabinet-Makers Assistant published 1853).
