American Mahogany Game Table with Lyre Form Dolphin Base, Connelly Phila C 1815

About the Item

American neoclassical cuban mahogany elliptical game table with a swivel hinged curvature top, decorative geometrical carved figured apron, flanking carved corner acorns, lyre form base with intertwined dolphins spouting water, and resting on acanthus carved saber legs with the original recumbent lion paw casters. Henry Connelly, Philadelphia Circa 1815. Secondary wood consist of Maple and White Pine.

    Rare design and great looking, handcrafted wooden chess table with unique natural patterns and colors. This midcentury era chess table (with built-in lamp in the base) has some of the most beautiful, natural colors ever. We don't know what type of Brasilian nutwood this table is made of, but this shape and these great colors will combine beautifully with all kinds of styles and materials. The design, the warm colors and especially the wonderful tree knot pattern in this all-handcrafted table are an absolute joy to look at. And with the light switched on, only the cores of the tree knots turn into a beautiful, deep red and almost purple color. We tried to shoot some photos with the light in the base of this table switched on, but the result is not at all what it looks like in real life (so much better looking than in our photos). We have sold a few table lamps of this 'knotted wood', but we have never seen a chess table of this amazing material. Apart from a few minor imperfections this very stylish chess...
