English Regency Rosewood Antique Games Card Table, circa 1815

About

The careful use of the precious and now mostly extinct Brazilian Rosewood throughout all surfaces was a risky approach for the craftsman of this table, as the wood is fragile and difficult to work into curves. It is also exceedingly difficult to prepare and can take on unattractive colors when handled improperly. But the result and the longevity of the table surface are a testament to the skill of the cabinetmaker, that despite the unavoidable cracking of the veneer from years of shrinkage and expansion, the table remains in exquisite overall condition. The overall cognac hue of the rosewood is beautifully contrasted against generous crossbanding in satinwood in the top and panels framed in satinwood in the apron. The focal point of the apron is a pierced floral mount with a beaded interior and tendrils spinning around in a pinwheel fashion. The table has been refinished and restored a few times over the centuries, clearly with minimal intervention beyond some veneer patching and a fresh iron strap that was likely affixed to the underside of the legs during the last quarter of the 19th century. The current French polish is relatively old and glows beautifully. Original brass hinges allow the top to be opened in the typical manner and rotated to support squarely on the frame, allowing the standard compartment for hiding game parts within the apron and opening to a broad baize covered surface for playing cards. This is raised over four turned columns anchored in a rectangular shelf into which the klismo legs are tenoned. These are raised over exquisitely cast animal paw castors. Materials: Rosewood veneers, elm columns, satinwood inlays, pine secondary woods, brass mounts and hardware, iron leg brackets Measurements: 29" H x 36 1/8" W x 35 3/4" D when opened; 17 7/8" D when closed Condition report: Extensive veneer patching to the fragile rosewoods: we can send a written summary these veneer patches upon request, but most are visible in the detailed close up images. Small veneer loss beside one hinge. One iron strap beneath legs is replaced, the other original. Slight buckle to the edge of the curved corners of the top from shrinkage. An early surface, not original, with age appropriate wear. Blue baize is early with discolorations. Stable, sturdy and a fine presentation.
