About the Item

Directoire walnut Guéridon, the white marble top with a pierced brass gallery; the turned post supported by three cabriole legs with carved knees. Stamped J P Dusautoy (see photo). There are a few small stains in the marble at about 9:00, visible in the photo. The ring is 1½" in diameter. Jean-Pierre Dusautoy was born in 1751 and received his "maître" in 1779. He was a Parisian furniture maker known for small tables with elaborate inlays and ormolu mounts, typical of the Louis XVI period. After the revolution of 1789 the taste for lavish furnishings gave way to simpler forms and materials, of which this little table is a lovely example. There seems to be some confusion surrounding the biography of Jean-Pierre Dusautoy. Evidently, he had two sons, one of whom was named Jean-Pierre, who worked in the shop well into the 19th century. The two standard dictionaries of French furniture makers of the 18th and 19th centuries agree on his birth date, but neither gives a death date. See notes 1 and 2 below. Interestingly, this table was imported into the United States sometime, circa 1900. The McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 mandated all imported goods be marked with the country of origin. Most notably, you see the words, "England" or "Made in England" on ceramics. This table, clearly made, circa 1800, is stamped four times, "Made in France", signifying it was brought into the US, circa 1900 and complied with the law.
