About the Item
A well proportioned low table made of walnut and burl walnut veneer (bookmatched). Made by, the father of French Modernism, Francis Jourdain (1876 - 1958), circa 1925. France. The table is stamped, Francis Jourdain” on underneath of table. There is also a decal with the name, Besnard, written on the underneath of the table. Albert Besnard (1849 - 1934) was a French artist who was friends and a colleague of Jourdain. Jourdain must have given the table to Besnard. There is an image of a portrait that Besnard painted of Jourdain.

Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, Leleu studied decorative painting and at the age of 26 succeeded his father in the family painting business. With his brother he began work in the Decorating field. After World War I, Leleu specialized in furniture making. He opened a Paris gallery, Maison Leleu, in 1924 and exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Industrielle et Arts Decoratifs, winning a grand prize at the exposition.
