French Gilt Bronze-Mounted Gueridon in the Manner of Paul Sormani

About the Item

This small finely inlaid table has an overall pattern inlaid with rosewood and tulip wood. The top is set off with a bronze small border and is then further mounted with small but very detailed mounts to the top of the legs, a pull for the single drawer and square cast sabots. The mounts are all finely cast with great detail and chasing. Paul Sormani was considered one of the more important makers of furniture in antique styles in the last part of the 19th century. His work ranks with Linke and Masion Kreger and was consumed by American gilded age families in large quantities. While we cannot fully claim this to be from the Sormani work shop the overall quality and degree of work placed on the small mounts and the very typical inlay pattern seem on many pieces by the firm seem correct. Of note signed pieces often are labeled on lock plates and large interior mechanisms which this table has never had making it possible that it was never signed. The table has a new French polish and only slight surface discoloring to the wood in a very small spot but no losses to the veneer or inlay.

This interesting and unusual table made in the southwest circa 1930 is constructed of Saguaro wood, a kind of slow-growing dense cactus with a distinctive outer casing that is used for decorative display. The form is an extension of the mission movement which started in California, Mexico and the southwest as a simple need to furnish through local craftsmen homes and public spaces with natural local materials The tripod base used upside down is the direct form of the cactus. A decoratively shaped piece has been added to the base as a terminus and the knotty pine top is bordered in saguaro with pine supports creating the gueridon. Made as a local distinctive form this kind of furniture is similar in nature to tramp art furniture...
