Louis XVI Bouillotte Table with Rotating Mechanism, 19th Century

About the Item

An unusual and quirky 19th century 'Bouillotte' table in the Louis XVI style, complete with white veined marble top and edged with a full gallery in pierced brass openwork. The table top has been expertly crafted with a rotating mechanism which works in combination with four petal-shaped hinged storage compartments in the frieze. These open outwards and are fully lined with green baize. Polished bronze 'roses' adorn the front of each belt drawer, and the table is supported on four square tapering legs, terminating in bronze sabots. Bouillotte tables take their name from the popular gambling card game, and were always circular in form, with pierced galleries which were designed to enclose a felt top. Pull-out compartments were ideal for the storage of cards and gambling chips. This table is of a very useful size, and, thanks to its elegant design, would work perfectly as a lamp or display table.
