Porcelain Pedestal Table "Allegory of Music", 19th Century

About the Item

Table guéridon in white enamelled porcelain, resting on a tripod foot, from the Napoleon III period. This small pedestal table is enamelled with a rich decoration of polychrome flowers in crown on the tray, the baluster shaft and the base. The attributes of Music are represented in the center of the tray and on each foot. The shaft is punctuated by several gilt bronze mounts, decorated with pearl friezes. This small side table is representative of the taste and manufacture of porcelain in Paris during the second half of the 19th century. Diameter of the tray: 39 cm Dim: W: 39cm, D: 39cm, H: 51cm. Very handsome Empire-style pedestal table in mahogany and superb ormolu mount after a model by Jacob-Desmalter, the circular top in verde antico marble surmounting a mahogany frieze mounted with a band of laurel leaves between rosettes, supported by the heads of three finely chased ormolu female caryatids, each facing outwards, hair braided, bare feet and arms crossed, wearing armbands and a diaphanous gown, the brace centered by a chased covered urn flanked by three elegant squatting winged sphinxes wearing Nemean headdresses and braids tied in front, all resting on claw feet. The design of this superb pedestal table was inspired by a famous table-console or "double-sided console" made by the renowned Parisian cabinetmaker Jacob-Desmalter, itself based on designs by Napoleon's chief architects and ornamentalists, Charles Percier (1764-1838) and Pierre François Léonard Fontaine...

A very fine French 19th-early 20th century Louis XV style mahogany, tulipwood, parquetry and ormolu mounted oval gueridon side table with a Brêche Violette marble top, attributed to François Linke (1855-1946). As was the practice among contemporaries and noteworthy predecessors, such as Alfred Beurdeley and Henry Dasson, Linke initially produced furniture derived from styles popular during the 18th century ancien régime.
