Take a step back in time with this authentic antique country French boucherie billot de boucher (butchershop butcher block) A charming early example, circa 1810, with beautifully aged heavily worn patina, full of antique character and charm, rustic warmth, and rich historical depth! Created in Provincial France in the early 19th century, this culinary icon exudes history and craftsmanship, hand-crafted of mixed woods including maple and oak, quality solid wood construction with visible pegged mortise and dovetail joinery that adds to the interest, having a shaped backsplash with convenient tool slot for storing utensils, meat cleavers, and knives. Featuring a thick heavy-duty contoured end-grain work surface with attractive worn smooth dark rich distressed patina, authentic wear, knife marks, and uneven organic form acquired from generations of cutting, chopping, carving, typical industrial knife work and butchery. Banded with large brass corner brackets, the rectangular butcher block sits over a paneled base stand fitted with a single deep spacious drawer, affixed with the original oversized brass ring pull, ideal for convenient knife storage and easy access, over a scalloped apron, rising on chunky turned legs. Includes a later stag antler handled sharpening rod and two rustic antique wooden handle food choppers with hand forged wrought iron blade stamped "6". *Please note, the monumental iron meat hook shown in the last photo is not included and available separately* Ideal medium/large size and substantial proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a functional farmhouse kitchen work table, buffet server, complex charcuterie serving board, massive wabi-sabi console, potting bench, or simply displayed in a commercial restaurant, wine bar or retail gourmet food store as a decorative conversation starter, statement piece or focal point. Attractive appearance, enhanced by nicely aged heavily worn distressed patina over the whole. - Recently lightly cleaned and waxed base, the butcher block oiled and conditioned to ensure many, many more years. - Typical expected wear consistent with 200 years of age and indicative of industrial use, including scattered nicks, chips, marks, minor losses. Desirable old power post beetle pinholes throughout. Drawer a little rough fitting. Small gaps at back and scattered throughout butcher block. Removeable backsplash. Overall strong, sturdy, stable. This antique "Billot de Boucher", or butcher block was crafted in southwest France, circa 1890. The large piece stands on four spindled-shaped legs ending with bun feet, and decorated with diamond shaped medallions in each corner. The block features a center drawer dressed with the original metal handle, over a carved scalloped apron on all three sides. The long table top made of mixed woods including maple and beech wood, features a carving station surface shaped from generations of use, embellished with decorative metal brackets at each corner, and decorative medallions across the front; the top is further dressed with two knife slot holders and two meat cleavers.
