About the Item

This rustic work purpose table made in pine was found in the New Lebanon area of Upstate New York. Used only during hog butchering time, mostly in early fall, the table was designed to come apart after its use and be stowed away. The area, a Shaker stronghold for many years, has influenced many elements of life even in non- shaker communities. The Shakers love of form and function as well as the pride in showing construction and manufacturing methods is clear in this table. The actual back and forth saw marks are still evident in this table, each board of the 3 board top simply but nicely shaped set down and attached with a thick single board across the underside creating a stable, flat surface. The legs, again simple and cut by a saw with the tool marks showing, are designed to fit into cutout holes in the top. The holes are round as is the part that sides in while the rest of the tables leg is squared off and can only span the distance required to secure the legs in place. Easily broken down when not needed the table would become and small compact form placed away until needed again the following year. The piece shows all the years and marks of its use with many cut marks deep into its surface all across the top. Shrinkage, warping, stains and old discolorations as well as water marks, rot, and wear all are visible. The color of the old dry surface, the way it is made and the wear and age all create a rustic yet dynamic and interesting piece rich with history and texture.
