Gispen Style Black Stained Conference or Dining Table by Tijsseling, Netherlands

About the Item

Massive Mid-Century conference, dining, or work table in the style of Gispen, manufactured by Tijsseling Meubelfabrieken in the Netherlands, likely in the 1960s or early 1970s. Tijsseling, a Dutch maker active during the Mid-Century period, was known for producing utilitarian furniture for offices, schools, and public buildings. The table features a black enameled metal frame paired with its original wooden top, which was originally teak and later stained black. The lacquered finish adds a dramatic presence while softening the heavy signs of use—deep cuts, gouges, and scratches—remnants of its past life as a work surface. The black enameled frame and teak construction are hallmarks of Dutch industrial design of the era, reflecting the Gispen tradition that championed functionalism, durability, and clarity of form. These values were deeply informed by Bauhaus and De Stijl principles that helped define Dutch modernism. The frame is in original condition with visible wear consistent with age and use. Manufacturer’s label affixed underneath.
