An antique English Queen Anne style painted oak lowboy circa 1850 used as a side table or console. This Classic piece of early English cabinet making features four legs that each have a robust knee that descends in a graceful curve before it flares out at the base to terminate in a well proportioned pad foot. At the top of each leg on either side of the knee is a groove that highlights the curve and taper. This subtle detail is an indication that a skilled craftsman was at work as the knowledge of what this slight addition would do to the overall effect of table would not have been chosen by a person with less awareness. The body of the table contains three drawers with a large drawer on the left and the right flanking a wide rectangular drawer in the centre. Directly below this centre drawer is a dramatic arch that sets the form for the entire apron across the front and sides. Please notice how the dramatic movement of the curved apron reinforces the shape of the legs. The high arch seen on both sides of the table serve to visually elongate the legs and creates a sculptural tension that would be lacking if the apron had a simple horizontal profile. In addition to the overall pleasing scale of this table it has been enhanced by a well thought out series of carvings that adorn the entire front as well as the three sides of the two edges. The decoration is all in the form of stylized foliage but rendered in a symmetrical manner with an special emphasis placed on the drawer fronts. The later painted finish was applied to highlight the carved details and to give the table a light and fresh appearance.
