About the Item

An elegant and architecturally composed set of three walnut nesting tables with inset glass tops, designed by French decorator and designer Raphaël (1912–2000). Each table features a clean-lined silhouette with subtly tapered legs and a stepped profile, framing the floating glass tops in a way that feels both modern and refined. Crafted in warm walnut, the surfaces have been gently polished to enhance their tone while preserving the original character and integrity of the finish. The set is documented in Ensembles Mobiliers, Volume 17 (1957)—a highly regarded survey of postwar French interiors published by Editions d’Art Charles Moreau, Paris. This inclusion affirms the tables’ importance within the canon of mid-century French decorative arts. Raphaël, born Raphaël Raffel, was one of the key voices in 20th-century French design. Active from the 1930s through the 1970s, he was known for his sophisticated interiors and holistic approach to space, often designing custom furnishings, lighting, and architectural elements. His work blended classical balance with modern materials and restraint, aligning him with contemporaries such as Jean Royère, André Arbus, and Jacques Adnet, while maintaining a distinctive voice of his own. He regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and collaborated with many elite clients and architects of the period. This kind of nesting table would have appealed to designers such as Henri Samuel, Jean-Michel Frank, or Maison Jansen, who appreciated understated forms and versatile pieces that could function effortlessly within both traditional and contemporary interiors. These tables would have appeared in elegantly composed Parisian apartments, modern villas on the Côte d’Azur, or American interiors curated by decorators seeking the quiet sophistication of French modernism. A rare, published, and documented ensemble—ideal for collectors of postwar design or interior designers looking for sculptural functionality paired with refined European heritage.
