Chinese Limestone Buddha Cushion, circa 1850

About the Item

Despite being carved from solid limestone, this 19th-century stone display stand has the presence of a plush, down-filled cushion. Resembling a column base, the cushion functioned as a simple plinth to elevate a seated Buddhist figure. The limestone base continues a long Chinese tradition of stone furniture, valued for its rich texture and inherent permanence. The minimal cushion is wonderful as a pedestal for a large planter or as a table stand for a precious sculpture. Pair available.
