About the Item

A fine circa 1740 English George II period 'pillar and claw' or tripod table of robustly drawn form and solid mahogany construction, the circular single-board top revolving on 'bird-cage' hinge (a square box-form hinge developed in the early eighteenth century with spindles at the corners, used so that the top may revolve horizontally or tilt to a vertical position) atop tapered 'cannon-barrel' form pillar support connecting to three cabriole legs on pad feet. An identical table is in the permanent collection of The Museum of the Home, London, formerly 'The Geffrye Museum', with inventory #25/2006 and is featured on page 247 in "Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740" by Adam Bowett. Literature: Bowett, Adam. 'Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740', Woodbridge: Antique Collectors Club, 2009, p. 247.
