Modernist Art Deco pedestal or plinth, 1930s, Belgium

About the Item

A tall and solid wooden antique art deco pedestal, column or plinth, dating from around 1930 and most probably made in Belgium. The piece has an impressive sculptural design with modernist lines in the shape of a skyscraper, tapering towards the top. The base is about 7,5 inches (20 cm) wider than the top. The plinth is rather tall, quite heavy and very stable. The wood has a stain and lacquer with lovely nuances in colour, brown with hightlights towards the greens/yellows. It's a great statement piece and also very suitable as a display for plants, sculptures or ceramics. The piece is in it original condition (see condition details) Art Deco, short for the French Arts décoratifs is a style of visual arts, architecture and product design, that first appeared in Paris in the 1910s (just before World War I) and flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. Through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and fashion, the Art Deco movement strongly influenced the designs of bridges, buildings (from skyscrapers to cinemas), ships, trains, cars and furniture. During its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. In New York, the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and other buildings from the 1920s and 1930s are monuments to the style.
