19th C. Bronze Table w/ Onyx Top
About the Item
This striking German side table, dated 1898, showcases exceptional craftsmanship with a richly detailed bronze base and a smooth, polished onyx top. The round tabletop is made from natural onyx, featuring beautiful veining and a soft, translucent quality that adds elegance and uniqueness to the piece. The ornate bronze base is cast with classical flair, supported by three elaborately decorated legs that curve outward, each adorned with mythological seahorse (hippocampus) heads and intricate floral scrollwork. The bronze has developed a warm, aged patina that enhances its antique character. On the underside of the base, a maker’s mark is clearly stamped: “GUSS L.R. 1898 G.M. 9986 GES. GESCH. L.R. IND. CO.,” identifying it as a product of the L.R. Industrie Company in Germany, with the “GES. GESCH.” indicating a registered design. This table is a beautiful example of late 19th-century European design, blending neoclassical and Art Nouveau influences into a functional yet highly decorative piece.
