About the Item
This mid nineteenth century Louis XVI style marquetry side table features a marquetry top in walnut, mahogany, and lemonwood that depicts a genre scene of onlookers at a chateau watching a hot air balloon in flight. The apron displays a a floral motif of inlaid sycamore. A single drawer of dovetail construction fits seamlessly into the apron and is fitted with a bronze drawer pull. The top rests on four gently tapered square legs finished with bronze sabots. The motif on the top commemorates the deep French history of hot air balloons with the first being launched by the Montgolfier brothers at Versailles in 1783. Later that year, the first manned flight would take place in Paris by Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier and Francois Laurent d’Arlandes, which would mark the first time man had ever taken flight since Leonardo da Vinci had drawn his theoretical flying machines in the 16th century. A unique piece for any space in the home, circa 1850.
