AKMD White Oak and Purple-white Marble Tee Table 'Small'

About the Item

This Scandinavian-influenced occasional table is available in White Oak with a Purple White marble base. The oak top and spindle are hand-turned together after joining. The marble base is hand carved from Purple-White marble from Rajahstan, India. The marble base provides a low center of gravity and good stability. Marble artisans of Rajastan have been producing gorgeous carvings for temples, tombs and palaces for over a thousand years, passing the trade and their skills down over generations. The Tee Table comes in two sizes. Look for a separate item from AKMD, a few inches shorter with a base of slightly different proportions to match its height. Use the two together for varied table surface heights in an arrangement, or across a room for a sense of sympathetic variation. The tall model is 24" high, the smaller one 19" high. The Tee Table also pairs well with our marble accessories or the "To Die For Stool" in white marble with contrasting inlays. Founded in 2011, AKMD developed out of a thirteen-year friendship and design collaboration between Ayush Kasliwal and Mike Dreeben. The two met in Jaipur, India in 1998: Dreeben had recently completed an MFA in sculpture at the University of Chicago and was working on a Fulbright grant, studying vernacular woodworking; Kasliwal had just completed study at the prestigious National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, with a degree in furniture design. What they found was a mutual interest in fine craft practices and how these could inform contemporary design. This has become a driving concept behind the AKMD collection. Both Kasliwal and Dreeben are makers and their design approach begins with a deep understanding of the inherent characteristics of material and of production method — allowing process to drive design, rather than the other way around. Their work is pragmatic and honest: the materials are presented straightforwardly, as are the mechanical connections that bind the pieces together. Their furniture is notably free of veneer and plastics, that don't provide the kind durability that one can expect from solid wood, cast metal, or saddle leather And although everything they offer is meticulously crafted, their pieces are comfortable and unfussy — pieces that you can live with, that will respond positively to use and age by developing a patina that reflects their history in one's home.

  • AKMD Lily Pad Marble Soap Dish
    By Michael Dreeben
    Located in Chicago, IL
These hand-carved marble soap dishes are crafted by traditional artisans in Rajasthan State, India. Their shape derives from lily pads, and they drain excellently, sparing one's soap from getting soggy. Hand-made, so individual items may vary subtly from one to the next. Marble carving has been practiced in Rajastan since at least the 7th century. Marble was known as the 'royal stone' and carvers used it to construct tombs, palaces, and temples. The Taj Mahal is composed entirely of white marble. Marble is a metamorphic rock that forms when limestone is subjected to heat and pressure in the Earth. It is composed primarily of the mineral calcite (CaCO3) and often contains other minerals, such as mica, quartz, pyrite, iron oxide, and graphite. Marble is a rock resulting from metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks, most commonly limestone or dolomite (rock). Metamorphism causes variable recrystallization of the original carbonate mineral grains. white marble is the result of metamorphism of a very pure (silicate-poor) limestone or dolomite protolith.
