Amboyna Wood Austrian Biedermeier Sewing Table Circa:1830

About the Item

This exceptional hand-crafted stand, while designed for sewing, is today more commonly used as an end table or bedside table or even as a side table, since it is finished on all sides. The beautiful light-colored wood is Amboyna, an East Indian wood highly prized in the West for use as veneer and inlay since Roman times. It was particularly popular for furniture in Central Europe during the Biedermeier period. The stand’s lift top opens to an original mirror and fitted interior with removable tray and lidded compartment. A lower drawer also has a fitted interior -- all hand made of mahogany. The supports are shaped as lyres, with ebonized wooden fittings and brass bars imitating the strings. The drawer has a working lock with a key. It has all the indications that it was made by a highly-skilled cabinetmaker in Vienna.
