About the Item

This is a lovely antique English Regency Revival mahogany and marquetry demilune console table attributed to the renowned Victorian cabinet maker and retailer Edwards & Roberts, circa 1880 in-date. The half-round tabletop is beautifully framed with a satinwood border and has a finely inlaid marquetry central urn within borders of acanthus scrolls and garlands of bell drops. The frieze inlaid with ribbons abd drapes is fitted with a central drawer, and it is raised on four square tapering legs, inlaid with bell drops and united by a flat platform with satinwood border and central oval patera. There is no mistaking their unique quality and design, which is certain to make it talking point in your home. As such, it is sure to take pride of place in your lounge or reception. Condition: In excellent condition having been cleaned and waxed. As an antique item, the piece show signs of use commensurate with age, these minor condition issues are mentioned for accuracy and, as seen in the accompanying photographs, the console table displays beautifully. Dimensions in cm: Height 76 x width 58 x depth 30 Dimensions in inches: Height 29.9 x width 22.8 x depth 11.8 Edwards & Roberts The firm Edwards & Roberts was one of the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the 18th century. The company was founded in 1845 and by 1854 was trading as ‘Edwards & Roberts’, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture’. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers producing high quality furniture and working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. The quality of timber used was always the best quality with fine burr walnuts, finely figured mahogany and lighter toned satinwood as they specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu. Marquetry is decorative artistry where pieces of material (such as wood, mother of pearl, pewter, brass silver or shell) of different colours are inserted into surface wood veneer to form intricate patterns such as scrolls or flowers. Satinwood is a hard and durable wood with a satinlike sheen, much used in cabinetmaking, especially in marquetry. It comes from two tropical trees of the family Rutaceae (rue family). East Indian or Ceylon satinwood is the yellowish or dark-brown heartwood of Chloroxylon swietenia. The lustrous, fine-grained, usually figured wood is used for furniture, cabinetwork, veneers, and backs of brushes. West Indian satinwood, sometimes called yellow wood, is considered superior. It is the golden yellow, lustrous, even-grained wood found in the Florida Keys and the West Indies. It has long been valued for furniture. It is also used for musical instruments, veneers, and other purposes. Satinwood is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Sapindales, family Rutaceae.
