About the Item
Barbican side table No.3 by A Space
Dimensions: H34, 29 x W27, 31 x H40, 64 cm
Materials: Misc. recycled.
The design duo conceived the Barbican Collection over the spring/summer of 2020 while on lockdown at the eponymous London architectural and cultural landmark. With supplies scarce, they turned away from materials such as marble and turned to what was on hand - cardboard, packaging materials, foam, food containers, and scraps of wood and metal. The work presents the philosophical position wherein value consists of the time spent interacting with a piece and seeing it take shape - in creating a unique Material and in discovering the ways in which it acquires a life of its own, informing both the process and the design. Made using a fusion of methods learned and reinterpreted from places as different as Western and Eastern Europe, USA, Vietnam and Japan, the work maintains a connection with something global and eternal, while responding to what is currently happening in the world.
The Barbican Collection calls into focus the process of reusing and recycling materials through an unexpected combination of tradition and experimentation. Crafted with an original mixture based on gypsum, recycled paper, and natural glue and finished with natural pigments and a waterproof topcoat, the pieces are both light and durable. The layers and hours of handiwork are reflected in the pieces, which explore the concepts of luxury, social and environmental awareness, and transformation.
A S P A C E is a New York-based design & art studio, co-founded by Anna Aristova and Roza Gazarian in 2016. Their collaborative pieces are an attempt to bring in the timeless beauty of nature to contemporary lifestyle, whether it’s functional furniture or a decorative object. The essence of each of their creations is a sense of a vast open space, where ideas, thoughts or feelings spontaneously arise, evolve through experimentation and ultimately manifest as a functional art piece. Each object is a one-of-a-kind creation that beckons to look beyond mere form and Material, and to connect to the primordial nature of the elements. Their work is a constant balance of opposites -- improvisation and thoughtful planning, intuition and knowledge, organic and geometric, timelessness and impermanence.

Galerie Philia
Galerie Philia is an international contemporary sculptural design and art gallery representing emerging and established designers and artists. The gallery is the brainchild of two brothers who share a lifetime passion for art, literature and philosophy. Their distinct academic background sets them apart from their peers, as it sees them following a rhizomatic and transcultural approach in the way they select works. This involves combining elements from multiple cultures in what becomes a network of harmoniously interconnected roots, ultimately revealing the beauty of each unique creation. The gallery’s non-hierarchical curation sits apart from the ephemerality of trends and focuses instead on the true aesthetic quality of the piece – alluring and timeless. Unlike others, Galerie Philia does not focus on a single style – whether minimalist, organic or raw – but rather embraces heterogeneity. The Galerie Philia takes pride in discovering new talents, providing them with multiple international platforms to showcase their latest creations. As well as propelling the newest generation of 21st century collectible design, Galerie Philia also works with internationally known design artists. Galerie Philia has a strong international presence, with galleries in Geneva, New York and Singapore. In addition to their permanent spaces, the gallery organizes temporary group exhibitions and artists residencies in first-class locations around the world.
