About the Item

Buffet table. Walnut wood, wrought iron. Spain, 17th century. Table with a flat rectangular top and two drawers at the front with a key lock (lock escutcheon trimmed with simplified architectural elements), decorated with a composition of rhombuses and triangles. The four legs that it presents, Solomonic, are joined in the lower area (starting from smooth dice) by Solomonic chambranas and smooth dice, creating these two squares, just in the area above the legs of the table, carved in the shape of a sphere. . Although it was an element used in architecture previously, the Solomonic column is a more well-known and common piece in the Baroque, especially since its use by Bernini in the baldachin of Saint Peter's in the Vatican (completed in 1633). It soon arrived in Spain, being used in Andalusia for the first time around 1639 and in Madrid in 1636, spreading throughout the peninsula and the colonial territories since then. Tables of this type, with drawers in the front, were not entirely an exception in Spanish Baroque furniture. Compare, for example, with the office of the Inquisition of the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid (in details such as the arrangement of the drawers); or with another walnut and pine wood platform table with carved drawers and lenticular turned legs from the same museum, dating from the 17th century. As for the Solomonic legs, examples are also preserved: a table with a mixtilinear chambrana dated between 1601 and 1800 (National Museum of Decorative Arts, Madrid); or the one dated between 1675 and 1699 from the same museum, which has Solomonic legs and lower chambranes turned into discs. · Size: 61 x 112 x 84 cm.
