Chinese Two-Drawer Carved Altar Table, c. 1850

About the Item

The pronounced grain and warm color of golden pine are wonderfully displayed in the artful carvings of this beautifully proportioned altar table. Expressive scrollwork articulates the table’s graceful flow from apron to leg to feet, marked by swirling cloud formations and floral motifs. Crafted by artisans in China's Gansu province, this 19th-century table was once topped with flowers, portraits, and incense as part of the ritual practice of honoring ancestors.
