"cover-me 05" arts and craft Side-table

About the Item

Elegant Handcrafted Table in Cherry Wood with Tapered Hexagonal Legs This piece is what I call a "cover version" in the world of design. Just as a musical cover reinterprets an original song, this table honors the original design by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, a key figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement, while engaging in a conversation with it. Much like how music covers offer new perspectives while respecting the spirit of the original composition, this handcrafted table is both a tribute to Baillie Scott's vision and a reinterpretation, offering a dialogue between past craftsmanship and modern design sensibilities. Baillie Scott was celebrated for his holistic approach to design. He sought to integrate every aspect of a building, from its structure to its interiors, in a cohesive vision. However, this "holistic" ideal often created a tension between the architect's vision and the craftsmanship needed to bring that vision to life. Baillie Scott's designs were rooted in high craftsmanship, but, as we often see in architectural history, the craftsmen who executed these ideas were sometimes left with little room to fully express their expertise. Their skills, honed over years of working with natural materials, sometimes took a backseat to the architect’s overarching design, despite the fact that the materials themselves, like wood and stone, follow their own rhythms and require patience in their manipulation. In this "cover version" of the table, I wanted to reflect on that tension and the way materials and craftsmanship shape the final product. This table, crafted from cherry wood, offers a lighter, more delicate appearance than the original oak version designed by Baillie Scott. The subtle alterations in proportions enhance its elegance, making it a modern take on the original, where form and material harmonize. The double-beveled tabletop introduces a distinct visual depth that differentiates it from Baillie Scott's version, much as a cover song reimagines an original with new elements that offer a fresh perspective. The tapered hexagonal legs, with their faceted surfaces that narrow towards the top, provide a sophisticated geometric aesthetic that enhances the overall visual appeal. Here, I’m embracing the idea that the design of the legs isn’t just functional—it also highlights the interplay of geometry and material. It’s not only the architect’s vision but also the craft of shaping the wood that influences the final design. This balance between the architectural concept and the craftsmanship involved in creating the form reflects the same underlying tension we see in Baillie Scott's work, where the craftsman’s input might have been less influential than it could have been in the final outcome. Craftsmanship is a slow process. It requires respect for the material, and wood in particular has its own rhythm, demanding patience and time. But in architectural and design practices, this patience is often compromised in favour of deadlines or aesthetic demands. In this table, the slow, thoughtful craftsmanship shines through, allowing the natural beauty of the cherry wood to come to the forefront through a hand-applied oil finish. The traditional joinery methods employed ensure the piece is durable and authentic, remaining true to the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement . In creating this piece, I aimed not just to replicate but to reinterpret—to bring new life to Baillie Scott's vision through a modern lens. This table is a reflection of how, when design and craftsmanship work together, it’s not just the vision of one that dominates, but the natural properties of the material and the expertise of the maker that contribute equally to the finished piece. It’s a reminder that the best designs emerge when the architect and craftsman collaborate, when both respect the material and process, and when the vision allows space for the craft to inform it rather than being subordinated to it. This handcrafted table is a celebration of the timeless elegance of Arts and Crafts design with a modern twist, a "cover version" that reflects the ongoing dialogue between the past and the present, between vision and craftsmanship.
