About the Item

A Dutch 1920s solid oak round top modernist table, tapering towards the base, standing on a sledge base. A simple but unusual design with a great presence because of the geometry and solidity. Ideal to place a heavy sculpture on or to use as a cocktail table. It is in very good condition, perfectly stable and sturdy. From certain angles the table comes across as a monolithic shaped block. When you around it the “monolith” dissolves into a play of shadows and light. An unusual design! ''Haagse School'' furniture manufacturing was centered in the city of The Hague with its rather affluent clientele. In the 1920s, a style of architecture and furniture design emerged in The Hague that would become known as The Hague School. More sober than the imaginative Amsterdam School and more elegant and luxurious than De Stijl, this style is also called Dutch Art Deco. After the First World War, young designers such as Henk Wouda, Cor Alons and J. Brunott developed their own modern design for the interior. They chose the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright as the most important example. They combined their idiosyncratic preferences with the commercial requirements of the Hague furniture factories. The result was the now well-known Dutch 'Hague School' style with its straight and geometric, modernist lines and shapes.
