Early Georgian mahogany marble top Hall or Side Table

About the Item

A fine and rare early 18th century red walnut cabriole leg Hall Table with rare and original mable top, known as 'Derbyshire Fossil'. The apron decorated with an usual geometric pattern similar to a 'Greek Key' ornament. this unusual pattern has previously been attributed to William Jones, based on designs for pier tables that he published in 1739 in 'The Gentleman and Builders Companion'. Wiliam Jones worked closely with William Kent as a follower of the Kentian movement in the early 18th century. The apron has neatly rounded corners above a convex moulded edge and lappeted cabriole legs with pad feet. Derbyshire Fossil is a Lower Carboniferous crinoidal limestone, abundant with fossilised small crustations, crinoids (sea lilies) and corals.
