About the Item

A Very Fine French 19th Century Neoclassical Revival Gilt-Bronze Circular Guéridon Table with a Roman Micromosaic and Specimen marble top. The intricate pierced ormolu floral apron accented with leg-rosettes complements. The tabletop is adorned with a central micromosaic panel depicting St. Peter’s Square in Rome, surrounded by rare and colorful inlaid stones. The table is supported by four elegantly tapered walnut legs, each terminating in gilt-bronze sabots and featuring finely chased female caryatid figures. A decorative ormolu stretcher connects the legs, enhancing both stability and aesthetic appeal. Signed under the micromosaic top "Orlandi Aristide / Via Sistina N 75B - Roma 1876". Circa: 1876. Literature: M. G. Branchetti, Mosaici minuti romani, Collezione Savelli, Roma 2004, p. 60 Among the intricate mosaic creations intended for furnishings, micromosaic tables were particularly widespread, crafted by Roman workshops in various shapes and styles. Masterpieces of this kind are preserved in prestigious international museums such as the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Palace of Versailles. One of the most successful types features views of Rome framed within panels of precious stones. Equally prized were tabletops where micromosaics were combined with inlays of fine marbles, known as commesso. Here, we present a significant example of this type. The commesso sections represented veritable “display collections” of rare stones. Height: 29 1/4 inches (74.5 cm) Diameter: 19 1/2 inches (49.5 cm) Micromosaic: 4 1/2 inches by 3 1/4 inches (11.5 cm x 8.5 cm)

A Grand Tour Centre Table The Top Attributed to Cesare Roccheggiani The carved gilt wood base in the manner of George Smith having four monopedia supports, each depicting leopards heads atop, with paw feet below, and conjoined by an incurved stretcher base having carved stiff leaf decoration, and raised on castors; the circular platform of marmoro nero, with a stylised Greek Key border within double Malachite reserves; the central micromosaic roundel depicts The Vatican from St Peter's Square, surrounded by eight separate roundels of The Pantheon of the Gods; the smallest of Rome's seven hills, the Capitoline; The Mauseoleum of Hadrian on the Tiber; The Roman Forum, with the remnants of the Temple of Vespasian; The Colosseum; the Temple of Vesta; The Arch of Titus, and the Tomb of Cecilia Metella. English / Italian, Circa 1875 The attribution to Cesare Roccheggiani is supported by Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, former curator of the Gilbert Collection and Honorary Curator for the Gilbert Collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Provenance: From a Noble family, the 6th Earl of Macclesfield (1811-1896) then by descent. The base is similar in design to designs published by George Smith's A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808. The taste for monopedia supports was of fashion, in the Regency period and models of such were displayed in the 1851 Great Exhibition. The Macclesfield coat of arms depicts a shield with a central chevron and three leopard's faces. Views of Roman monuments was the most popular theme used by mosaicists in Rome in the beginning of the 19th century, supplying the flow of wealthy Grand tourists from Northern Europe. From small gold boxes...
