George III Mahogany Octagonal Tilt Top Tea Table
About the Item
The octagonal top with a spindle gallery and a gadrooned edge, the spiral fluted stem on foliate carved cabriole legs ending in claw-and-ball feet. With yellow crayon numerals along the inner brace probably indicating a Stair & Co provenance.
Provenance: Property from the Estate of Georges Bemberg, New York City.
Bemberg was a well known connoisseur and collector. Born into a wealthy Argentine banking and manufacturing family, he had homes in New York City, Paris and Buenos Aires. He established a museum in Toulouse for much of his collection (See Foundation Bemberg in Toulouse). Most of the collection in his New York City apartment came from top dealers and auction houses worldwide, including Stair & Co., Christie's and Sotheby’s.
