About the Item
Elegant Handcrafted Table in Black Cherry Wood
This elegant table reinterprets Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s iconic card table, originally designed for the Argyle Street Tea Rooms in Glasgow, 1888-89. A "cover version" of the original, it honors Mackintosh’s vision while introducing a new creative dialogue. The table blends history and modern craftsmanship, bridging the past and present.
Mackintosh, influential in both the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau, championed a design philosophy that balanced natural materials with stylized forms. His work reflected the tension between the architect’s vision and the craftsman’s expertise. While his holistic approach emphasized the architect’s control, this reinterpretation brings the craft into the conversation, allowing the materials to guide the design.
Crafted from black cherry wood, this table has a warmer, softer presence compared to the original oak. Its design departs subtly from Mackintosh’s tulip-inspired form, instead referencing the seed of an oak tree, symbolizing growth and transformation. The black cherry wood’s natural grain and warmth further enhance the piece’s unique character, allowing craftsmanship to shape the form, rather than strictly adhering to the architect's vision.
Embodying the ongoing dialogue between vision and craftsmanship, this piece reflects the core values of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. By respecting the material’s natural properties, the table achieves a balance between design, craft, and durability.
Finished with natural oils and handcrafted using traditional joinery techniques, this table is both a tribute to Mackintosh’s legacy and a contemporary exploration of the balance between form and function. Fully customizable, it offers a timeless reflection of craftsmanship and design that remains relevant today.

frank buschmann
Frank Buschmann (1969-Pinetown, South Africa), artist / craftsman /designer .
Trained as a industrial designer and cabinetmaker. Of German origin, currently living in Galicia, Spain. He spent his childhood in South Africa and Nigeria, his adolescence and education in Germany, where he studied cabinetmaking at the Karlsruhe School of Crafts. In the Netherlands he studied Industrial Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where he has been later teaching in the Master "man and humanity". Frank argues that the mastery of a trade is a carrier of tools exemplary for the sustainability of the future. Being a master of a trade is not reduced to the virtuosity of handling some techniques but also supposes a long learning to recognize and cultivate specific attitudes and values. With this approach, Frank intends to recover and maintain the knowledge and practice, not only of the traditional techniques and processes of cabinetmaking, but also its values: patience, intuition and the search for perfection. The virtuous management of techniques goes through the learning of values and attitudes and, all of them, he considers, are universal tools needed to deal with the complexity of the future.
