About the Item
This important and stunning pair of mosaic-topped side tables were made by Jack Stewart, a leading New York artist who is best known today for a massive wall mosaic depicting Apollo and his chariot installed at the Versailles Hotel in Miami Beach (now in storage). The table mosaics are composed of ceramic shards in white, tan and gold, all set into a heavy brass frame. Stewart was a major figure in the 1950s, his paintings widely exhibited and his mosaics featured in books published by Furniture Forum and magazines such as House Beautiful. His large mosaic commissions included murals for the Hotel Aruba Caribbean; the SS Santa Paula; and Public School 28 in New York City. Each table is signed and dated underneath. The heavy brass top and legs have recently been cleaned and restored.
