About the Item

This is an old Japanese primitive-style side table, believed to have been made during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). It is a piece in which the strength of natural materials and a sense of rustic beauty coexist in perfect harmony. The tabletop is carved from a solid block of chestnut wood, whose grain exudes the dignity and character earned through long years of use. The legs are made from natural cedar branches, retaining their organic curves and form. Both the top and legs are darkened with a soot-like tone, suggesting that the table may once have stood near an irori (traditional hearth). The deep black hue is not applied, but rather formed naturally through years of exposure to fire, smoke, and time—creating a patina that only life itself can produce. This piece embodies not just craftsmanship, but the quiet wisdom of everyday life. It speaks of people who shaped their surroundings using what was at hand, blending utility with beauty through intuition and necessity. Though primitive in appearance, the table’s structure is both strong and stable, making it entirely functional even today. When used as a stand for a flower arrangement or as a base for an art object, it adds a sense of natural calm and warmth to any space. Its rough-hewn yet dignified presence perfectly captures the spirit of wabi-sabi—the Japanese appreciation for imperfection and impermanence. Within its irregular form lies the depth of time and the warmth of human touch. This table stands as a quiet testament to that timeless Japanese aesthetic. Tabletop size: approximately 320 mm × 240 mm Weight: 9 kg _______________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
