Jean Claude Dresse Mosaic Coffee Table in Brass

About the Item

Jean Claude Dresse, coffee table, brass and steel, Belgium, 1970s Enchanting coffee table designed by Belgian artist Jean Claude Dresse in the 1970s. This square table with rounded edges is easily recognizable as a design of Dresse, displaying high attention for detail and one of his favorite materials to work with: brass. This table has a sculptural and luxurious appearance established by a geometrical base. The top shows a phenomenal texture featuring mosaic that circulate in a biomorphic movement. The different abstract forms are hand-hammered resulting in a magical composition. The side of the top is signed stating ‘Dresse’. Jean Claude Dresse (1946-) is a Belgian artist and designer. He graduated from the art academy in Charleroi. His background of being a visual artist is clearly visible in his furniture designs as he uses artistic techniques such as mosaic and etchings. His oeuvre embodies designs made of precious metals such as brass and copper. Together with his father Marcel, he was a prominent figure in the furniture business in the 1980s and belonged to the artistic Walloon School that focused on glamorous aesthetics. After he and his father were successful as designers Jean Claude embarked on a career as a visual artist. Dresse designed many furniture pieces on commission, which means that a large part of these items is custom-made.

Jean Claude Dresse, coffee table, brushed stainless steel and brass, Belgium, circa 1970 An extraordinary piece, crafted with great eye for proportions and detail, typical for the work of Dresse. The combination of materials such as steel and brass, have a formal yet luxurious character that emphasizes the rich appearance. The use of the same stainless steel base makes the design a whole and creates an interesting lightness to the total look of the table. Jean Claude Dresse (1946) is a Belgian artist and designer. Jean Claude Dresse, coffee table, brass, brushed steel, Belgium, 1970s Rectangular coffee table with striking tabletop designed by Jean Clause Dresse in the 1970s. Dresse is known for his bold designs, this table is no exception. The surface is artistically fragmented illustrating various angular shapes in etched brass and is framed in brushed steel that combines wonderfully with the darkened tone of the brass. Due to the artistic use of materials and texture combinations, the table has a strong decorative character and hits the border between piece of art and furniture design. Jean Claude Dresse, coffee table, marcasite and steel, Belgium, 1970. This unique coffee table by Dresse was owned by a Belgian private collection from Brussels. This example is custom-made and of a spectacular size (measuring 150cm) which is exceptionally large for Dresse's pieces. Besides its size, what is is important for the quality of this table is that the piece is made by hand with an marcasite inlay from scratch. All Dresse's pieces are handmade: ''The only tools used are shears for cutting the mosaics and a polisher to finish the works'. The thick luxurious top is finished with a high gloss black edge that is accompanied by an architectural base in brushed metal. The Marcasite inlay was placed pointing towards the centre of the table, which gives it a dynamical look and great visual depth. It is important to know that Dresse was the first to produce these kind of metal or stone mosaic tables...
