Originally, he trained as a shipbuilding engineer and worked in that field. However, in the 1930s, Østervig shifted his focus to furniture design due to his passion for working with wood. Østervig’s career as a furniture designer began at E. Knudsen’s architectural design studio in Odense. In 1947, he opened his first studio as an independent furniture designer, with a focus on modern design. Over the following decades, he worked with several of the leading Scandinavian furniture producers of the time. Østervig was exceptionally versatile, designing furniture for hotels and cinemas, and won numerous design competitions throughout his career. He was awarded prizes at the Milan Triennale in 1953 and 1960. In the 1960s, one of Østervig’s designs was selected for an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Østervig had a flair for the spectacular, adding unique elements to his furniture that made them stand out. From elegant, organic pieces to rugged, purely functional designs, his versatility earned him recognition.
