About the Item

A Regency period occasional table painted to simulate marbles and rosewood, English circa 1790-1810, the canted rectangular top painted in a variety of colors with twenty-four panels to simulate various marbles, with a simulated rosewood outer edge and brass border band, the simulated rosewood base with a frieze drawer flanked by elongated foliate mounts, on four slender square section legs outswept at the feet, joined by a X-stretcher, with a label inscribed Burwood to the underside The distinctive painted ‘trompe l’oeil’ marble top on our table reflects the taste in Regency England for importing marble from the Continent. Whilst on their Grand Tour, gentlemen would have visited quarries and various workshops in Italy, where they would have seen specimen tops being made. The top on our table would have been designed with such specimens in mind and is a rare survivor of its type. Our table also bears testament to the theatricality which pervades English furniture at this period, its painted form creating a setting in a room, as if on a stage, a nod to the booming popularity of the theatre in Georgian society. Theatricality and exuberance were trademarks of the Prince Regent, the dominant arbiter of taste at this period.
