Lava Side Table by Pedro Ávila

About the Item

Born in Brasilia, Pedro Ávila holds a bachelor's degree in industrial design (Senac, 2012) and a specialization in sculpture, modeling, and foundry (Central Saint Martins, 2019). He developed his design work with an eye toward the sculptural nature of objects.

He started his first authorial work in 2005 when he co-founded Estúdio Orth, a design studio in Brazil where he also created a few pieces of furniture partners. and objects Since then, In 2019, he founded the e-commerce Noda alongside art director Otávio Françoso, where they curate and develop kitchen objects.

In 2020, Forbes magazine wrote about Pedro as among the highlights of the year's "Under 30" professionals. At the end of 2021, he began his work through sculptural studies of materials, exploring direct modeling techniques such as ceramics, wood carving, 3d modeling, metal casting, stone machining, and fiber molds. This study led to two collections, "Cavas" and "π" (pi), in which both two series were created with manual and mechanical production. The π collection results from several sculptural essays with spherical volumes as their starting point, exploring possible variations from this initial form. These exercises were initially developed manually in clay and digitally in 3D software. Pedro created various modeling methods, such as aluminum casting, fiberglass, digital machining of wood, solid marble blocks, and basalt (volcano lava). As a final result, Pedro created coffee tables, side tables, and armchairs, whose organic, voluminous, and harmonic shapes refer to the biological forms of the human body and its folds. “p,” refers to the greek letter which illustrates the numerical proportion depicted by the relationship between the perimeter of a circle and its diameter, making an obvious allusion to the repetition of spherical corners.
