About the Item

A George II–III period mahogany tripod supper table, dating from around 1760. This fine quality example features a well-figured, single-piece solid mahogany top, mounted on a traditional box birdcage pivoting and tilting mechanism. The top is supported by an elegantly turned baluster column, raised on a tripod base of carved cabriole legs. Constructed throughout in solid early mahogany of excellent colour and density. An attractive and original table of good proportions, displaying fine craftsmanship and a rich patina. In very good condition and ready for use. Dimensions (approximate): Height: 70 cm (27 ½") Diameter of top: 79.25 cm (31 ¼") Condition: In very good and original condition, commensurate with age. Structurally sound and sturdy. All original apart from the wedge securing the top to the base. Minor marks and blemishes to the surface, well polished in with time. A fine hairline split to the top, scarcely visible. Scuffs and light wear around the feet. Excellent colour, patina, and wax finish. Never French polished. Cleaned and waxed, ready for use. As with all antique furniture, minor signs of age and use are to be expected and contribute to the character and authenticity of the piece.

Antique English 18th Century Early Georgian Dish Top Bird Cage Tripod Table
Located in Glasgow, GB
A handsome 18th century early Georgian mahogany tripod tea table with a dish top. It features a solid figured mahogany circular tilt-top with single reeded line to the outer curved edge, with a bird cage mechanism to a turned baluster shaped column raised on outswept cabriole legs with pad feet. Retaining a good original colour and patination and original brass catch. This is a better quality example of its type being moderately larger, the top being from a single piece of mahogany and having the slight lip to the outer edge, due to the dish top, and curved underedge, in addition the birdcage mechanism lets the top rotate without lifting the entire table. The tilt-top allows the table to be displayed at the side of the room when not in use (and the birdcage also means the top can be faced out with the legs arranged pointing into a corner, or flat against a wall). This is a typically plain and robust George II example dating to c.1730-1750. The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately Width - 33.865in (86cm) Depth - 33.75in (85.5cm) Height - 28.75 (73cm) The top can be separated from the base by removal of a wedge in the birdcage. Note: The tripod table (or ‘pillar and claw...
