Exclusive and elegant Napoleon III-style occasional table with three shelves and one drawer; the straight legs, slightly undulating toward the bottom, are made of black lacquered wood; on the perimeter of the upper tabletop is an elegant gilt brass openwork railing; the other two tops have delicate decorations, also in gilt brass, along the edges; the convenient drawer underneath comes with an elaborate handle in excellent brass casting; the peculiarity of this coffee table is the workmanship with which the tops and the upper band that includes the drawer was made, in fact, they were made with exceptional geometric inlays with varieties of an unusual and original wood: "the bird's eye of maple." This work of art was created by a true master cabinetmaker in a perfect and meticulous manner between 1830 and 1835 in an artisan workshop in the town of Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a French commune in the department of Isère, nicknamed the furniture town for its ancient tradition of woodworking. The master achieved an object of amazing fineness, the rigor of design, sharpness, and regularity; moreover, he used the inlays, in a perfect and meticulous manner, only maple wood taking advantage of the different chromaticisms offered by this fantastic material. Maple is an ancient wood, a wood that has been known and used for a long time: it is semi-hard, extremely porous, with a delicate color that meets shades of yellowish and beige, with slightly darker inlaid veins that fade to pinkish. The grooves of color, the delicacy, and the unchanging beauty, are characteristics peculiar to its wavy fibers, which create a vaguely striped, light-colored, delicate optical effect that varies with light and its reflections. "Maple birdseye" is' a type of figure that occurs within sugar maples; it has a distinctive pattern that resembles tiny swirling eyes that interrupt the soft lines of the wood grain. The reason the Birdseye maple tree is so rare is that its pattern is unique and occasional and cannot be intentionally duplicated by humans. Woodcarvers, turners, and sculptors particularly appreciate maple wood, as they are able to particularly enhance finer details. The decorations on the coffee table are distributed in such a way that the piece of furniture is enjoyable all around. The side table is quite light in both form and actual weight; this elegant art object can also be used as a nightstand or chiffonier. The object is in good condition.
