Dutch Art Deco modernist occasional table attr. to Cor Alons, marked C. den Boer

About the Item

A very well made modernist /Haagse School oak side table, 1930s. Interesting and scarce design with the rounded leg ends and the asymmetrical storage compartments. The table is tagged with a metal plate ''Firma C. den Boer'' from Gouda. Cor Alons (1892 - 1967) was one of the designers in the firm. This table was most probably one of the early designs after he started working there. The table is in very good condition, lightly restored (refinished professionally) It stands stable and is very sturdy. Background information The Hague School In the 1920s, a style of architecture and furniture design emerged in The Hague that would become known as Haagse School. More cubist and functional than the imaginative Amsterdam School style, but with some similarities as well. After the First World War, young designers such as Hendrik Wouda, Frits Spanjaard, Cor Alons and J. Brunott developed their own modern interior designs. For inspiration they chose the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and combined their idiosyncratic preferences with the commercial requirements in furniture design of that time. The result was the now well-known Dutch 'Hague School' style with its recognizable forms and shapes.
