Dutch Art Deco Occasional Table by P.E.L. Izeren, 1920s

About the Item

Architectural and eye catching occasional table from the Dutch Art Deco era, 1920s. Designed by P.E.L. Izeren for De Genneper Molen. The table has a modernist or ''Haagse School'' design. This modestly sized table with its intricate designed pointed tablelegs and cross/star shaped base combines very well with modernist pieces and art. The piece is made of solid oak with black stained parts. The top has been lightly refinished (some stains removed and french wax) P.E.L. Izeren (1886-1943) designed several pieces for 'De Genneper Molen'' and worked there until the late 1930s. The Genneper Mill was a sawmill, housed in an old water mill in the town of Gennep (in 1898). The name referred to the water wheel that initially powered the sawmill. From around 1917 the sawmill started to manufacture small furniture such as small tables, umbrella stands, coat racks and tea cabinets. They called it ''supplementary furniture'' , as advertised in their catalogues. Soon this became the core business of the sawmill. Designs for the Genneper Molen were quite similar and visibly influenced by the ''Haagse School'' architects (famous designers: Cor Alons, Frits Spanjaard and Hendrik Wouda).

  • Dutch Art Deco desk lamp by Daalderop, 1920s
    By Daalderop KDM Royal Holland
    Located in EVERDINGEN, NL
A rare Dutch Art Deco table lamp or bedside light by Dutch manufacturer Daalderop, c. 1925. The piece is in excellent condition regarding its age. These lamps were produced in brass and nickel plate. This one is the nickel version. The lampshade is made of painted parchment, and is reminiscent of batik (tie-dyed) designs by Bogtman. The top can come off to change the lightbulb. Because of punched holes in the top as well as the bottom the light shines through these holes when placed in a dark room, which has a lovely effect on the surrounding surface. These holes had an aesthetic function as well as necessary in those times for the heat of the (incandescent) lightbulb to escape. It now works with modern energy efficient (E27) lightbulbs. The one that is now inside will be included. The Daalderop factory was founded in 1880 by J.N. Daalderop. in the eraly years they produced household items like tableware, pots and dishes, kettles, and gas lamps. The style of the products evolved towards that of art deco and the Amsterdam School. At the end of the 1930s, the company had approximately a thousand employees, making it one of the largest employers in Tiel. The family business was under the undisputed leadership of Johan Daalderop (1883-1961). Until the Second World War their most important designer was Meine Huisenga. Klaas van Aken was also one of the designers. The lamp is depicted in the Dutch Art Deco/Art Nouveau guide...
